"THE WAY OF THE RIGHTEOUS"

The first Psalm begins: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord." And it concludes. "For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish."

It does not read that the ungodly shall perish, but "the way of the ungodly," the belief of pleasure in sinful, ungodly ways. One who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night will not sit in the seat of the scornful, will not look down from a superior position on those who have not as yet learned the way of the righteous. One dwelling in the house of the Lord and delighting in His laws will radiate the joy and gladness, the peace and harmony, of His way. Others, beholding this radiance, will be led to turn from their pursuits of false pleasures, and "the way of the ungodly" shall perish for lack of use, as a pathway in the woods that is not used is lost in new growth.

Because of her husband's employment it seemed necessary for a young woman to be with people who not only drank excessively but considered the ability to drink "well and graciously" a mark of culture. In fact, it was deemed a necessary qualification for the position. Moreover, insisting on her husband's making a change in employment or refusing to co-operate put a strain on the family ties.
