I should like to express my gratitude...

I should like to express my gratitude for that gentle, dauntless Christian, Mary Baker Eddy, and for Christian Science, which she revealed to the world.

I began to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy and to attend Christian Science church services when I was in college. My family disapproved, but made no strong objections while I was away from home. After my graduation, however, they made vigorous efforts to make me go back to my former church, in which I had been very active for years. My parents had denied themselves in many ways that I might complete my college work, and I felt a strong sense of obligation to them. I became confused and finally yielded to a false sense of love and loyalty and agreed to do as they wished. My mother's tears of joy made me feel that I had done right, and I hid my copy of Science and Health in the back of my bookcase.

Two years passed, and again I was very active in church work, though I found no joy in it. I returned home after a summer in Europe with a disfiguring skin disease. Unsightly blotches covered my body, and three specialists failed to diagnose the trouble. I was so embarrassed by my appearance that I remained alone in my room most of the time. I was taking seven kinds of medicine and had to keep a chart to remember which kind came next. I had no money left and could not apply for a position with my face in such a repulsive condition. I was in despair and did not even have the dubious solace of weeping over it, for tears were too painful. After three weeks with no relief, I was very rebellious.
