After I had been studying Christian Science...

After I had been studying Christian Science for several years, what I believe to be a rheumatic condition presented itself, and I was unable to rid myself of it. The thought that I had not made much progress in my understanding of Christian Science began to disturb me very much.

I went to the Reading Room to study and to pray. I recalled an incident on a trip which my husband and I took into the mountains; at one point we could see a winding road a long way ahead of us up the mountainside. As we went along, there were stretches of road on which we were going downgrade; but as we looked behind us, we saw the town we had just left far below and knew, of course, that we had been progressing toward the summit all the time.

At this point in my meditation it occurred to me to look back to the time when I began my journey up the road of Christian Science. I remembered that this journey started in the valley of despair, sickness, fear, and discouragement. I had been ill much of the time following an injury caused by a fall several years before; and although I had been under medical care and had submitted to a major operation, I continued to grow worse. Physicians predicted that I would never regain my health.
