THE JOY OF SPIRITUAL DISCOVERY

A SUCCESSFUL young businessman gave a testimony in a Church of Christ, Scientist, one Wednesday evening. In it he expressed his happiness in again visiting the place of his early boyhood. He mentioned that his favorite companion during those years was a lad who attended the Christian Science Sunday School and who occasionally related to him healings he had received through radical reliance upon and trust in God's goodness.

In later years the young businessman moved to a distant city. He was alone, without friends, and unable to secure work. Days of mental and physical unrest followed, until suddenly one morning he thought of his young Christian Science friend and the latter's confidence in the certainty of the Father's loving response to the call of mankind. He immediately visited a Christian Science Reading Room, spent several hours in reading the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and borrowed copies of these books from the lending library for home use.

Upon returning to his apartment, he was told by the landlord that a request had come in for him to call a business firm. He did so and secured employment. At the close of his first day's work he found himself surprisingly eager to return home. Soon he was running block after block, faster and ever faster, with a feeling of joyous expectancy. He did not pause to question why, but hurried up to his room, opened the Bible and Science and Health, and began to read. Then, realizing the good purpose which had prompted his quick return, he broke out into happy laughter, the first real joy he had expressed for many months.
