HEARING

TO Mind, God, belongs infinite self-comprehension, and Mind's unlimited consciousness of itself, of reality, is forever reflected in man, who is thereby empowered to hear or to know all there is to be heard or known. Hearing is spiritual perception, or awareness. Since this is the normal condition of man, God's image and likeness, never can it truly be said that man cannot hear, or that his hearing is defective. The only senses man possesses are spiritual, and these Soul-senses are not subject to loss or impairment.

Because hearing is a faculty of Spirit, divine Mind, it necessarily partakes of the nature of its source. Hence it is spiritual, ever present, unconfined, indestructible; it is complete, perfect, undepleted, unobstructed, active; moreover, it is effortless. Understanding and hearing are one.

The belief that matter possesses sensibility is proved in Christian Science to be fallacious, for this Science teaches that all real consciousness is divine Mind, God. Matter has no awareness of spiritual reality, that is, of God and His infinite, harmonious creation. If we would be assured of sound faculties, we must stop attributing to matter the power which it does not, and cannot, possess and must instead realize the permanence of true hearing, which is derived from Spirit. In a most enlightening passage in her book "Unity of Good" Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 21), "There is no sensible matter, no sense in matter; but there is a spiritual sense, a sense of Spirit, and this is the only consciousness belonging to true individuality, or a divine sense of being."
