When Christian Science was first...

When Christian Science was first shown to me, I was in the depths of despair, not because of any material want or anxiety—I had all the material things I desired—nor because of ill-health, but because existence had become senseless. I believed in nothing and in no one.

No physical suffering can compare with this mental darkness. Jesus said (Matt. 6:23), "If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" How great indeed! I pray that this testimony may bring hope and courage to someone in a similar state of unbelief.

I shall always be grateful that as a child I lived in a home where the Bible was loved and read, but as I grew in years, my childlike faith did not grow, and what I had been taught left me like a ship without a rudder. I looked in vain for signs such as Jesus gave, but all seemed a mockery. Health, happiness, and security, all of which I had, seemed a matter of luck; and if that were so, I did not want them. I felt instinctively that these blessings must somehow be part and parcel of religion, but how?
