QUIET DEPARTURE
Let
me depart in quiet thought.
Intent to catch the message that I sought,
I listened to the lecturer's voice.
Above all else one thought stood out.
It will not clothe itself in words again,
And yet, departing as I ought
In quiet thought,
I hold its tender import and rejoice.
It loosed me from a burdened sense
That somehow I
Must twist, reshape, or vanquish matter;
That I must alter mortal circumstance.
It left me free to trust God's gentleness.
I knew a sudden grateful joy that He
Is ever loving all impartially.
I need not find those words again.
I thank God for this time of quiet thought
To savor well the message that they brought,
To love warmly and widely.
