LOVING THY NEIGHBOR

In his epistles John, the beloved disciple of Jesus, pours out freely, in expressions both beautiful and convincing, his recognition of the love of God, and he reiterates his deep conviction that God is Love. There is a helpful precedent for mankind in John's simple declarations.

Christian Science unfolds an understanding of God which makes John's concept both logical and practical and also reveals man as the expression of infinite divine Love. This man of God's making, His image and likeness, is our true selfhood and the true selfhood of our neighbor, in whom there is nothing unlovely or unlike the perfect and loving Father. In the light of this revelation the fulfillment of the imperative command of the Master (Mark 12:31), "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," becomes an achievement wholly possible and profitable.

The art of loving our neighbor is an uplifting, satisfying, and comforting attainment, indispensable to the happiness and joy of good living, and ensures our getting along well with others. We are immeasurably blessed in practicing this art, for through it we find that divine Love, when reflected, heals and is triumphant over every discord. Love is the essence of Christian Science, which strongly emphasizes the great importance of loving. We must learn that we cannot be too loving, too forgiving, or too charitable.
