At the time of my introduction to...
At the time of my introduction to Christian Science, about thirteen years ago, I was a very active worker in an orthodox church. I was engaged in preliminary study for the ministry, and because I had a great desire to heal in the name of Christ, I wished to become a medical missionary. It may well be imagined, therefore, that with such a background of orthodox theology, my attitude toward Christian Science was very skeptical at that time. I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, with a genuine desire to understand its meaning, but with no success; rather did my skepticism increase.
This attitude was changed, however, by a beautiful healing experienced by a close friend through the understanding and loving help given by a Christian Scientist, now my wife. The scientific meaning of the Scripture (I John 4:18), "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear," was so clearly brought home to my friend that she was healed of a spinal complaint which had troubled her since childhood. She had been obliged to wear an abdominal support, but she joyfully discarded this through the revelation of man's perfection as a child of God.
This healing convinced me that there must be truth in the teachings of Christian Science, and I was impelled to take the textbook again and study it more deeply. It was, however, many months before I was able to cast away the veil of old theology and clearly see the truth of being as taught in Science. But when the revelation came, I am most grateful to say, it was so complete that I was constrained to sever my connection with the church in which I had been so active a worker, in order to be free further to pursue my study of this Science, and also because I felt it would be dishonest not to do so.
