Testimonies in our periodicals...
Testimonies in our periodicals have for many years been a source of encouragement and help to me, and it is my hope that this testimony will help others. I had the privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School for a number of years. However, it was not until our son was about four years old that I became a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church. I am increasingly grateful for this membership and the privilege of working for the Cause of Christian Science.
Our son came home from high school one day and remarked that the school nurse had looked at the wart on his anklebone, which was quite large and ugly, and said that it might turn into a serious condition if he did not do something about it. I realized that indeed we must do something about it, and I was grateful that our remedy, Christian Science, was available. The beautiful passage from Ecclesiastes (3:14) came to my waiting thought, "Whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it." And from Genesis (1:31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." I realized that since God's creation is perfect, we would not wish, or need, to take anything from it. Whenever I was tempted to look at the condition of the foot, I refused to do so, but held instead to the present perfection of man in God's likeness. In a short time the wart disappeared, leaving no scar.
I am very grateful for the healing of a painful and unsightly eye condition. It was not a quick healing, and I was forced to study harder and draw closer to God than I had ever done before, which proved a blessing. From time to time I received help from a practitioner, but did not receive my healing. Finally, when the condition seemed particularly aggravated, I called again for help, telling the practitioner that it seemed to me I had worked faithfully and applied Christian Science to the best of my ability. The words of truth which she spoke made me realize that I had been looking for healing in matter. This was the turning point. On page 569 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy we read, "He that touches the hem of Christ's robe and masters his mortal beliefs, animality, and hate, rejoices in the proof of healing,—in a sweet and certain sense that God is Love." I saw that the "sweet and certain sense that God is Love" was the only proof of healing which I needed. There was no further desire to look in the mirror to see how matter was progressing, and in a few days the abnormal eye condition disappeared.
