I can never cease to be grateful...
I can never cease to be grateful for my first healing in Christian Science. For over three years I had been suffering from an acute form of nervousness and I was obsessed and tortured by the fear that I should harm my children and then take my life. Doctors had attended me during this period, and kindly as they were, they seemed unable to help me. I attended services regularly at our parish church, and I prayed that some message of comfort would be given me from the pulpit, but each time I left disappointed. I then resorted to patent medicines and foods, tonics, and drugs, but they did not help me, and I was steadily losing ground.
One morning, feeling that I was completely at the end of my tether and that life for me could no longer go on, I cried aloud, "Please, God, do help me." I went to my room and took up a little book which contained the following Bible citation (John 8:32): "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." I knelt by my bed and said, "Please, God, show me this truth," and whilst I remained kneeling, patiently waiting, the answer came so clearly that it was almost audible, "Christian Science." I did not know the first thing about this Science, except that one day when out walking I had met someone who mentioned a family that attended a Christian Science church.
My need was desperate, and I at once went to my neighbor's door and asked if she would tell me something about Christian Science. She gave me a Sentinel to read, but I was in such mental distress that what I read did not mean much to me. The next day my neighbor invited me to go to the evening service with her. When we were seated, I looked around the beautiful little church and, to my great joy. I read upon the wall the selfsame text: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." On the opposite wall was one of Mrs. Eddy's most beautiful quotations from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." I knew at once that my prayer was answered.
