PROMOTING THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR

Promotional activity seems generally to be of two kinds. One is concerned with the promotion of selfish interests and victimizes people by appealing to vanity, cupidity, and fear. The other is the promotion of that which helps people to better themselves.

There is no doubt as to which kind of promotion is in keeping with Christian Science; nor can there be any doubt as to the propriety of promoting the religion of Christian Science as a service to mankind. Mary Baker Eddy turns thought to a consideration of this subject when she writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 102, 103), "Christian Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and preeminently promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community."

It does this naturally and effectively by revealing God as infinite Love and man as Love's spiritual idea. Christian Science, distinguishing between the material misconception of man as mortal and the spiritual understanding of man as God's own image, inevitably despoils evil of its claim to identity and power. It makes more fully appreciable man's Love-endowed selfhood. Thus this Science is more than a humanitarian system depending on its adherents for promotion. It is God's own defining of reality making itself known to mankind.
