Scarborough, Yorkshire, England (First Church).

The services at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Scarborough, on September 11, 1949, were marked by the dedication of the church building in Falsgrave. In an illustrated brochure for the occasion it was stated that it is believed that Christian Science was introduced into Scarborough by a practitioner from a near-by village in 1905.

A statement read by the First Reader at the church describes how, as members of what was then a Christian Science Society increased, various premises were rented, including the Temperance Hall, Falsgrave; Roscoe Rooms; Railway Chambers, Valley Bridge; and Nelson Street Chapel. "In 1926," continues the statement, "the society, then worshiping in the Co-operative Hall, was recognized as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Scarborough.

"In April, 1928, this church purchased Lawrence House, in which services were first held on October 30, 1928. Later, extensive alterations were made and additional rooms built, making an auditorium, also a Reading Room and library on the ground floor, and Sunday School assembly room and classrooms and offices on the first floor."
