O give thanks unto the Lord...

"O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy" (Ps. 107:1,2). It is time I added my testimony to the mighty chorus of witnesses to the healing power of Christian Science.

Twenty years ago my wife and I attended our first Christian Science church service in Chicago. A business associate had been rescued from death by Christian Science, and this made us very thoughtful. My work as a consulting engineer took us to various cities, and I took my family with me. In consequence of not being in one place very long at a time, we attended no church regularly. One day we discussed putting the children in Sunday School and decided to attend a Christian Science service to see what it was that had proved so beneficial to my associate.

The first thing that caught my attention was the reading from the desk of the explanatory note in the Christian Science Quarterly, where it says, "The Bible and the Christian Science textbook are our only preachers." Later it says that they "constitute a sermon undivorced from truth, uncontaminated and unfettered by human hypotheses, and divinely authorized." This made a profound impression on me. Here, I thought, is a sermon without human opinion. I had heard sermons that did not agree with my interpretation of certain Bible passages, but I found nothing to disapprove in the reading from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Instead I received enlightenment and much food for thought. It certainly did corroborate and explain the Bible texts.
