ILLUMINATION
Disdainful,
arrogant, self-satisfied,
Saul journeyed down the long Damascan way;
One ruthless purpose his, and pride,
The Master's followers to denounce, betray,
And persecute them even unto death—
For what of good could come from Nazareth?
But as he journeyed, lo! a sudden light
Encompassed him about; the voice of Truth revealed
The evil of his deeds, the mercy and the might
Of Christly thinking. Saul was healed,
More swiftly than a story that is told,
All earthly dross transmuted into gold.
This then remembering, let us never see
Our neighbor in the guise of yesterday;
For even in this moment he may be
Responding to the Christ-light on the way,
Newborn of Spirit, knowing Love as all—
No longer Saul, but Paul!
