Troy, Ohio (First Church).
The new home of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Troy, located at 606 McKaig Avenue, was dedicated on Sunday, July 17, 1949, at the regular morning service, which was repeated in the afternoon.
The new church is located in a former two-story frame residence. The living room has been converted into the church auditorium with an acoustic ceiling and pale green tinted walls. The former dining room is now used for the Christian Science Reading Room. A Sunday School room is located on the second floor.
The First Reader read a historical sketch of the church. He said interest in Christian Science was first indicated in Troy about 1890. A group of students began to hold meetings in their various homes to read the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly. In 1915 a room at South Market and Race Streets was rented.
In September, 1918, the group organized and applied for status as a Christian Science Society, a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts. Recognition as a society was granted early in 1919. Two years later a Sunday School was started.
In July, 1923, the group moved to rooms in the Masonic Temple. It remained there until 1945. Requirements for becoming a branch church were met in August, 1936, when the society became First Church of Christ, Scientist. Troy.
The present building was purchased in 1947, with plans being made to redecorate it for use as a church home and Reading Room. A building fund had been established some years previously. Thanks were extended to the American Legion for use of its former home at Mulberry and Franklin Streets for several years.
The first church service was held in the present location on June 6, 1948, following redecoration of the home and freeing it of debt.
