For about two years after I had...

For about two years after I had influenza, a bronchial cough persisted. This was accompanied by pain in the abdomen, which made me fear cancer. A few years before this my mother had passed on after many years of suffering with bronchial asthma. My fear had apparently been developed through a belief in heredity. One night before we retired, members of my family called attention to my cough and said that they thought, since I was studying Christian Science, I should be able to heal myself.

When I arose the next morning, the cough again appeared as it did each morning. After breakfast, when my family had departed for the day, I determined to examine my thoughts. I prayed fervently to God that I might know the truth and refuted the belief in heredity with the facts that God is the only Father and Mother of man and that man is the eternal reflection of the divine Mind.

On page 3 of the textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy states, "The Divine Being must be reflected by man,—else man is not the image and likeness of the patient, tender, and true, the One 'altogether lovely.'" I immediately saw that I had to cast out all impure thoughts in order to reflect the divine Mind, and this brought me instantaneous healing. I was at once lifted out of a sense of a material body into a higher and clearer understanding of Life as Mind. On page 425 of the textbook we read: "If you have sound and capacious lungs and want them to remain so, be always ready with the mental protest against the opposite belief in heredity." The pain in my abdomen disappeared completely and has never returned.
