LETTERS TO THE PRESS from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Chicago, Illinois The Christian Century

An article entitled "Theology Is Important," which appeared in a recent issue of The Christian Century, contained references to Christian Science which are so contrary to fact as to require some comment. Christian Scientists do not "deny the sufferings and death of Jesus," nor that the material body dies. Innumerable citations could be given to illustrate.

The whole second chapter in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, entitled "Atonement and Eucharist," explains the point clearly. I shall quote a few selections: "While we adore Jesus, and the heart overflows with gratitude for what he did for mortals,— treading alone his loving pathway up to the throne of glory, in speechless agony exploring the way for us, —yet Jesus spares us not one individual experience, if we follow his commands faithfully; and all have the cup of sorrowful effort to drink in proportion to their demonstration of his love, till all are redeemed through divine Love" (p. 26).
