THE HEALING WORD OF TRUTH

Sometimes it is asked, "How can mental treatment, or prayer, change a discordant physical condition to one of health?" Such a query usually arises from the long-accepted belief that physical healings result largely from structural changes produced by surgery or else from biochemical changes produced by materia medica. It may also indicate disbelief in the spiritual healings recorded in the Bible, which today the incredulous explain away as miracles.

It is true that some of the healings which are related in the Scriptures are referred to as miracles, meaning marvels; yet nothing that is contained in these accounts would lead the reader to believe that spiritual healing is a supernatural gift bestowed upon a select few, as some still contend. Thanks to Mary Baker Eddy, spiritual healing can no longer be regarded as a mysterious or inexplainable exhibition, for its system and rules are now set forth in the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." For writing this book, Mrs. Eddy declares the Bible to have been her only textbook.

Most of the books of the Bible contain some reference to the Word of God, either as Deity's direct speaking to men or as His message voiced through prophets or teachers to instruct, enlighten, save, and heal them. A dictionary says that the Logos, or Word, is "the actively expressed, creative, and revelatory thought and will" of God. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health(p. 134), "The true Logos is demonstrably Christian Science, the natural law of harmony which overcomes discord,—not because this Science is supernatural or preternatural, nor because it is an infraction of divine law, but because it is the immutable law of God, good."
