"I will extol thee, O Lord; for...

"I will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me" (Ps. 30:1).

About two years ago a motorcar under which I was working slid off its supporting jacks and pinned me to the ground in a suffocating, doubled-up position. As I was losing consciousness, the first thought that came to me was of inevitable extinction. This was followed immediately, however, by a pervading sense of comfort that my life, as Christian Science teaches, is not separate from God, who forever sustains it.

I returned from oblivion to find myself able to breathe even in that contorted position, although movement beyond that required to call directions to the native workers who had been summoned to my aid was impossible. No small space of time had elapsed before there was a sufficient number present to lift the car enough for me to adjust my position so that I could be dug out without the pressure of the heavy car upon me. In considerable pain in my back, and also internally, I was carried to my bed, where I stayed for four weeks.
