It was over seventeen years ago...
It was over seventeen years ago that the beautiful truth of Christian Science came into my life. I had been suffering from a disease unknown to medical science, and I was told that an operation might help me. It was one chance in a hundred, but I decided to take this chance. A few days before I was to go to the hospital, an aunt who lived in the same city suggested that I try Christian Science. I laughingly said that I would try anything once. She gave me the name of a Science practitioner, and that very day I went to her. As I related my story, she lovingly told me that God, my heavenly Father, never gave anything but good to His child. She told me further that if I began the study of Christian Science I could use no medicine, because one was antagonistic to the other. I told her that I did not think I could give up medicine; but she again said that my Father could do more for me than mindless medicine. She spoke of God's goodness and His promises to His children who loved Him. It all sounded so logical to me that I decided to try it.
She gave me a book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and told me not only to read it but to study it. I left her house feeling as though I were healed. I had such an uplifted sense, for I saw God as I had never seen Him before. As I reached my home, I was again attacked by pain and rushed in to get the medicine bottle. I approached the bottle eight times; then I threw it out of the window. Fear overtook me, as I knew I could only replace it with a doctor's prescription. But what the practitioner had said about my Father doing more for me than medicine flooded my consciousness. That night I slept all night for the first time in four years.
I stayed with the Bible and Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, reading and studying them for a whole year every minute except for time to eat and sleep. The trouble for which I was seeking healing persisted, but other ills fell away without specific work. Each day I had the courage to go on and fight it out the right way.
