"The triumphs of Christian Science...
"The triumphs of Christian Science are recorded in the destruction of error and evil, from which are propagated the dismal beliefs of sin, sickness, and death" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 272). The dismal belief of sickness, which had deprived me of the ability to carry on the duties in our home, to care in the right manner for our three children, and to partake of normal activities, caused me to cry out to God that I could go on no longer in that condition. Kind physicians had done all they could to help me, but to no avail.
On the day that I had cried out in extremity to God. I came upon a Christian Science lecture printed in the afternoon paper. I read this lecture through, and something in it made me realize that I could be helped by this Science. There was a neighbor's child playing in our home at the time. I knew that she and her mother were students of Christian Science, so I questioned her as to how her mother had become interested in it. She told me of a healing which her mother had experienced.
In a few days I called on the mother and asked her about Science. She told me a great deal about it and lent me her copy of Science and Health. I read the book day and night. At first I understood little of it; but when I read on page 388, "If food was prepared by Jesus for his disciples, it cannot destroy life," I was healed of the fear of eating certain foods and then and there discarded a near-starvation diet I had been on for many months. I started to eat anything I desired with no fear of bad results, and there were none. Thus my first demonstration came solely through the reading of the textbook, Science and Health.
