The healing Christ has always...
The healing Christ has always been present and has again been revealed to this day and age by Mary Baker Eddy. How grateful mankind should be to this God-inspired woman. The following testimony bears witness to the fact that this redemptive and regenerating healing power is available now to all who accept the teachings of Christ Jesus as revealed in Christian Science.
All through my life I have received numerous blessings, and for these I am most humbly grateful to God. I was raised in a Christian home, but it was not until I took up the study of Christian Science that I truly became aware that God is the Giver of all good, an ever-present help, never afflicting His children.
When about fourteen years old, I was stricken with a disease that the doctors were unable to diagnose. I was delirious for many days. Later I was told that the doctor and minister who called on me daily had held no hope for my recovery. This illness left me with a slight limp, and when sitting down I was unable to cross my legs without the aid of my hands. For over twenty years this condition existed.
Later in life I was most fortunate to marry one who was interested in Christian Science. I read a little in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy and attended the church services a few times, but came to the conclusion that I was not ready for Science. That I was not ready was indeed true, for I was interested only in accumulating more material wealth, which at that time seemed to me to be substance. In my struggle for this false sense of security— and it was indeed a fruitless struggle —it mattered little what the nature of my business was, provided it yielded a handsome profit.
During the next ten years I became so engrossed in my pursuit of material things that I was in utter darkness regarding the spiritual. I had completely forgotten about Christian Science, never even remembering that I had read Science and Health, attended a church service, or seen a Church of Christ, Scientist, and yet there was a large church just one block from my place of business. Then the darkest day of all came, when I seemed about to lose all my possessions, including my business. But "the darkest hour precedes the dawn," for at that time a friend came into my place of business, and in the conversation that followed he mentioned that he ushered at a Church of Christ, Scientist.
The following day was Sunday, so I attended church services. I shall never forget the tender, loving welcome we received, and the hope and courage that rose up in my heart upon seeing so many happy, smiling faces; but more than all this, I received such a sense of inspiration and peace of mind during the service that I was awakened to see that in Christian Science was my only hope and salvation. Returning home after the service, I commenced reading the Bible and Science and Health, which have always been in our home. Through the illuminating light that Science and Health threw on the sacred pages of the Scripture, the Bible became a new book to me, full of inspiration and logical reasoning. I read again in this new-found light the Master's Sermon on the Mount, in which we are admonished among other things (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness." We are told that then "all these things shall be added unto you." This had a new and profound meaning to me. I began reading the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily, and spent many hours studying. One evening, much to my amazement, I discovered that I had been sitting in a chair for several hours, reading Science and Health, with my legs crossed without any discomfort. It then dawned on me that I had been healed of the long-standing leg condition by reading Science and Health. The healing has been permanent.
I am grateful that early in my study of Christian Science I was divinely led to take three of the many footsteps so wisely and lovingly provided for us by our dear Leader: membership in a branch church, membership in The Mother Church, and class instruction. Through the intervening years my life has been immeasurably enriched with a truer sense of what constitutes life, health, joy, business, and I have a greater sense of supply today than I have ever before known. These are but a few of the many things that have been added unto my life through the faithful, consistent study and application of the teachings of Christian Science and active church work.—Edwin C. Grant, San Diego, California.
