SPEAKING THE HEALING WORD

We read in the eighth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew: "When Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saving, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him." Whereupon the centurion in humility answered, "Lord, I am not worth that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed." Marveling at his great faith, the Master told him to go on his way; that his request was granted. The centurion believed him and started on his homeward journey. In that same hour, we read, his servant was healed.

How simple and direct were Jesus' answering words, "I will come and heal him;" and what a depth of compassion and understanding he displayed. How confident he was in his ability to cope with the situation. He expressed no anxiety, no fear. With him there was no false sense of responsibility. He did not refer to the disease by name, nor did he discuss the symptoms. It is noteworthy, too. that Jesus did not say, "I'll do my best," or "I'll try to heal him." With him there were no mental reservations, no halfway measures.
