MIND AND MAN

Christian Science teaches that God is the Mind of man. There is one Mind, and one only. This Mind is spiritual and infinite. It knows no limitations or inhibitions. It does not mentalize or vitalize matter, or express itself in what is termed the brain and nervous system. The divine Mind expresses blissful, not painful, being.

We cannot rightly regard this Mind apart from ourselves. The least expression of spiritual intelligence reflects the presence of God. On the other hand, the carnal mind is the opposite of the divine Mind. It appears to have the characteristics of a mind, but in fact it has none of them. It is material and finite, a supposed mentality in matter.

The seat of mortal mind is believed to be the brain; its system of communication is said to be a nervous system. It is manifest through the material senses, which give unreliable evidence concerning the universe and man. The carnal, or mortal, mind names its own concepts. In its classification of itself are to be found various types of diseases, mental and physical. Among these is what is known as insanity, or mental derangement.
