That a great understanding of Christian Science is not necessary for a healing was proved to me over twenty-six years ago when I received my first healing. I had always had a weak stomach and suffered from sick headaches. During the First World War I suffered a complete nervous breakdown, and for the next four years I went from doctor to doctor seeking help. Finally I consented to an operation, which proved unsuccessful, and I still was unable to retain any nourishment. At this point the doctor told me that he had done all he could for me.

It was then that I turned to God in prayer. The thought came to me: Why not try Christian Science? Christian Scientists believe in healing by prayer. I promised myself that if I could live until morning, I would see what it could do for me. The next morning I got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner and was instantaneously healed. My family and friends looked upon my recovery as a veritable miracle because it was immediate and complete. There was no period of convalescence. I ate solid food the same day and had no ill effects, although I had been living on liquids for months. At the time I weighed less than eighty pounds. In four days I had gained eight pounds, and the doctor confirmed my healing.

This proved to me beyond a doubt that Science does heal. Since then I have been able to prove this many times. Various children's diseases, including whooping cough, mumps, chicken pox, measles, and scarlet fever, as well as a broken arm, were quickly healed. Our two younger sons were born quickly and harmoniously with the help of a faithful practitioner and a Christian Science nurse.
