OUR LEADER'S RECORD

The Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, preserved this Science for mankind by writing and publishing the Christian Science textbook. Mrs. Eddy acknowledges that she had to learn the higher meaning of this book after writing it, and she devoted her life to the demonstration of the truths it reveals. She says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 271), "When I wrote 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' I little understood all that I indited; but when I practised its precepts, healing the sick and reforming the sinner, then I learned the truth of what I had written."

The prose writings of our Leader, as compiled in the volume entitled "Prose Works other than Science and Health," set forth the essence of what she learned and proved of the spiritual facts revealed in Science and Health. It is one thing to acknowledge that the textbook is a divine revelation. It is quite another matter to demonstrate the truths contained therein. The spiritual wonder of her Prose Works, the marvel of their regenerating influence, the freshness of their style, the healing effect of the truths they propound, indicate the care with which Mrs. Eddy studied the textbook and her demonstration of the vast Science it unfolds. She was its most devout and discerning student. When we think of the greatness of her individual demonstration of Science and the modesty of her attitude toward that demonstration, we can only stand in reverence.

Mrs. Eddy states her purpose in preparing "Miscellaneous Writings" in its Preface. Here she says (p. xi), "May this volume be to the reader a graphic guide-book, pointing the path, dating the unseen, and enabling him to walk the untrodden in the hitherto unexplored fields of Science." And farther on she adds, "In compiling this work, I have tried to remove the pioneer signs and ensigns of war, and to retain at this date the privileged armaments of peace."
