After more than fifteen years of...
After more than fifteen years of enjoying the benefits of Christian Science, I humbly offer this testimony—humbly, because I realize that I should have done so a long time ago.
When I was eighteen. Christian Science was presented to me by a relative in whose home I visited, but I rejected it, not then seeing the need to break with orthodoxy. Many years later, after I had married, one of our little girls fell ill with rickets, and having exhausted the resources of available child-specialists, I began reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Taking the book with me on a trip to the seashore with the child and her brother and sister, I read it as much as I could and was able to attend a Church of Christ, Scientist, several times. We also went to see the relative who had first talked to me about this wonderful religion years before. We had a long talk, in which she cleared up questions that were bothering me, and I left with a clear sense that Christian Science could heal my child.
This healing came about naturally the next winter; crooked limbs became straight, abnormalities of bone structure disappeared, and the little one began to grow for the first time in two years. She developed into a normal, healthy, well-built girl. I was so new in Science that I did not then know that there were practitioners. Later on I learned from my cousin that because I had not asked her to do specific work, she had not in the usual sense done so, but had simply corrected her own thought of pity with the truth about the perfection of God's child. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 571), "At all times and under all circumstances, overcome evil with good," and this upholding of the truth about man, coupled with my own growing receptivity, let in the light, and the healing came.
