Although I have been close to Christian Science all my life, it was not until about seventeen years ago that I turned to it completely, through necessity. By saying I was close to it, I mean that I attended Christian Science Sunday School from the age of five until I was eighteen. Then I left home to attend the state university, and while there I began to get away from the teachings of Christian Science. I took up smoking and occasionally I drank.

I worked out all my problems through human effort, or the hard way, until the so-called depression of the early thirties. At that time I lost a manufacturing business which I owned and became much depressed mentally. Asthma, from which I had previously suffered, returned. Instead of having Christian Science help, I sent for a doctor, who gave me only temporary relief. Each time I would send for him the relief would be of shorter duration, and the next attack would be worse. After I had lost thirty pounds in weight, he said that my heart was so weak I could not live through another attack.

That was all I needed to hear. I turned completely to Christian Science. I studied it constantly, had the help of a practitioner, attended every lecture in this region; and my demonstration was made.
