THE NEED FOR WATCHFULNESS

"Good watch prevents misfortune," says an old proverb. A Christian Scientist would agree with this adage. He considers spiritual watchfulness to be as necessary as prayer. Christ Jesus emphasized the need for watchfulness when he said to his disciples, "Watch and pray."

There are many aspects of keeping watch. A sentinel on outpost duty, for instance, is posted to safeguard his comrades against attack and is given specific orders for doing so.

The watch of a Christian Scientist is not unlike that of a good soldier. The Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy contain admonitions and instructions on this important subject. In these volumes truth and error are clearly defined. Like a good soldier a Christian Scientist realizes the importance of obedience to the instructions given. He knows he must not neglect his watch even if conditions seem difficult. The Scientist finds it necessary to watch his motives, to keep guard over his thinking, to bridle his tongue. His watch therefore begins with himself. Many an unhappy episode can be traced to unguarded moments when emotion such as anger, passion, or fear is allowed to take control and speak or act through its victim.
