Smoking habit given up as Truth is revealed

Very often we feel that if circumstances were different we would be better able to overcome the obstacles which beset our efforts to grow more spiritual. Christian Scientists, who understand that all right activity is God-directed, find no hardship in placing circumstances and obstacles in their rightful categories. It is through one's spiritual understanding that these obstructions often become the steppingstones to a more substantial recognition of harmonious being.

I have had many proofs of the omnipresent healing power of God since taking up the study of Christian Science, and it is with sincere gratitude to God that I relate the following experience.

Prior to my interest in Christian Science I was a very heavy cigar, pipe, and cigarette smoker. Then the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was recommended to me, and I began to read it. As I read, it became evident that smoking is not only an undesirable habit but an evil one. I was informed that the habit had to be overcome before church membership could be attained. It is now apparent that the many fruitless attempts which I made to overcome this habit through will power were largely responsible for my delayed membership in a branch church and in The Mother Church.
