It was over thirty years ago that I had the following experience. I had been trying to do a great deal in a very short time and had a bad fall, breaking my hip. The best doctor in the city where I lived was called, and he and his assistant set the bone. After eight weeks they came to put me on my feet, but I could not walk.

When I realized that I was not going to walk, I called an old friend, a doctor, in order to get his advice about the condition. He was leaving that night for six weeks, but he promised to advise me upon his return. I had been studying Christian Science for a few months, and when the doctor returned and came to see me, I told him I was going to change my religion. He advised me to have an operation and also told me my chances of recovering were fifty-fifty. I decided to have the operation, but said I did not want anything done for me but the setting of the bone. The operation was performed, and the next day ether pneumonia set in. I understood the material law regarding all this, but I did not let it trouble me. I told the doctor I did not want anything done and that I wanted the light left on by my bed, as I was going to study my book.

I was alone, yet not alone. I never had a thought that God was not right there with me. Through my prayers and tears I never for one moment had any fear. Such peace, calm, and real penitence for any wrong which I might have done to anyone, I had never known before.
