MIND IS ITS OWN INTERPRETER

At a Wednesday testimony meeting in a Church of Christ, Scientist, a woman spoke of her gratitude for Christian Science as something that could hardly be expressed in words. She added that this was not surprising, since Mary Baker Eddy herself found human words inadequate to express fully God's revelation to her of Christian Science.

This seeming inadequacy did not, however, deter the author of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Mrs. Eddy writes therein (p. 460), "When the Science of Mind was a fresh revelation to the author, she had to impart, while teaching its grand facts, the hue of spiritual ideas from her own spiritual condition, and she had to do this orally through the meagre channel afforded by language and by her manuscript circulated among the students. As former beliefs were gradually expelled from her thought, the teaching became dearer, until finally the shadow of old errors was no longer cast upon divine Science."

Our Leader realized that her work was not complete as the Discoverer of Christian Science until she had stated her discovery in terms that the average person could understand. After tireless labors in writing and revising the textbook, she was finally enabled to say (ibid., pp. 146, 147), "Divine metaphysics is now reduced to a system, to a form comprehensible by and adapted to the thought of the age in which we live."
