MAN CANNOT BE ENTICED

Christ Jesus , the master Metaphysician, endeavored to rouse humanity to the need of being ever awake to the allurements of mortal mind. He instructed his followers (Matt, 6:9, 13): "After this manner therefore pray ye:... Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

Jesus could not be tempted to err by any enticing suggestions of the so-called carnal mind. He obeyed only the will of his Father, divine Love. He knew that the tempter has no power over the individual except he give his consent. Knowing its own limitation, evil tempts with the alluring promise, "All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me" (Matt. 4:9). In other words, evil pledges many things if we will but bow down and make it our god. If we acquiesce in its temptations, we are failing to obey the Father's will.

It is inconceivable that our Father, who is perfect Spirit, could beguile or lead astray. On page 17 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy spiritually interprets the portion of the Lord's Prayer previously quoted as: "And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death."
