Christian Science opens to all mankind the true, progressive way of Life
THE ART OF LIVING
For many centuries mankind has sought to master the art of living. The early philosophers strove earnestly to find the explanation of life and to prove their theories in everyday living. The true concept of Life, or God, is one which cannot be grasped, however, through the material senses. Life, the eternal I AM, which man expresses, is glimpsed only through spiritual sense. A clear and inspiring definition of Life appears on page 290 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." There Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Life is the everlasting I am, the Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase."
To some, living means earning money to cover the necessities of life—food, clothing, and shelter— in order to exist, To many others, living implies all those absorbing, intellectual, artistic, religious activities in which a person may engage after fulfilling the normal duties on which he depends for daily bread. To the Christian Scientist, however, living means gaining a fuller understanding of God as Life and man as His expression, and a joyous, successful full-time employment in demonstrating the truth of being.
Christ Jesus mastered the art of living and left an example which all may follow. He urged mortals (Mark 12:17), "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." He presented mankind with a masterly dissertation on the Mosaic law— the Sermon on the Mount—which forms the basis of all right living. It is the key to the art of living, or, in Christian Science terminology, the Science of being. If we are obedient to the laws given by Christ Jesus, to love God, good, with all our hearts, and our neighbor as ourselves, we shall make substantial progress towards the mastery of the art of living and eventually achieve an adequate and convincing demonstration of the Science of being.
