The Christian Scientist discovers true joy in ascending toward the realm of the real

"REACHING FORTH UNTO THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEFORE"

Most people desire to reach the summit of their profession, to be a front-ranking lawyer, businessman, artist, or successful homemaker. They know that this means hard work, and often self-sacrifice; but for a variety of reasons, such as ambition, the need for increased salary, or an unselfed desire to help humanity, they feel the climb to be worth while.

If the student of Christian Science wishes to increase his understanding of the truth revealed to this age by Mary Baker Eddy, he too has a hill to climb, but at no time need the ascent be other than a joyful experience. As the mountaineer rejoices in the ascent of a chosen peak, however arduous the climb, so the student of Christian Science enjoys the ascent of his choice.

In her book "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy gives inspired directions to the climber in an article entitled "An Allegory." Here she clearly states that no one will reach the mountaintop of Christian Science unless he follows the Way-shower; and then she continues (p. 328): "Whatever obstructs the way,—causing to stumble, fall, or faint, those mortals who are striving to enter the path,—divine Love will remove; and uplift the fallen and strengthen the weak. Therefore, give up thy earth-weights; and observe the apostle's admonition, 'Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those which are before.' "
