An Army chaplain lets his light shine and helps heal others of the drink habit
GLORIFY AND SANCTIFY
Jesus turned men to righteousness with this injunction (Matt. 5:16): "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." But often men have despaired of reflecting the light of Spirit in good works and have sighed (Matt. 19:25), "Who then can be saved?" Christian Science, however, showing that what is involved is not a material endeavor, but the expression of divine law, reassures one in the Master's words (verse 26), "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible."
The light which Jesus directed his followers to let shine forth results from the realization of man's at-one-ment with God. The man of God's creating manifests His all-inclusive glory in perfection and holiness. Christ Jesus not only taught, but proved in his healing work, that man is related to God— Life, Truth, Love—the source of spiritual light, as reflection. Christian Science is today healing all manner of discord in proof of it.
The command to demonstrate that the real man expresses light as the reflection of Love simply parallels the original pronouncement that man is made in God's image and likeness, found in the first chapter of Genesis and demonstrated in Jesus' proof of man's absolute spiritual nature or selfhood. The Master's concept of man was so consistent and clear that those about him who seemed sick or sinful were instantaneously healed. The beautiful prayer of Jesus in which man's sanctity or holiness is seen to be coexistent with God's glory occurs in the seventeenth chapter of John. Part of it reads (verses 1, 10, 11, 19): "Glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee. ... All mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. ... Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. ... For their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth."
