"Love is impartial and universal...
"Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 13 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I am most grateful for the universality of Christian Science, for the spiritual nourishment supplied us by our periodicals, and especially for The Christian Science Monitor. Membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church has awakened me to the great wisdom and devotion expressed by our revered Leader in establishing such a comprehensive and democratic organization.
Since my early youth it has been my privilege to study Christian Science and to rely on its spiritual truths for healing. However, during my college years I became confused and tried to serve two masters, attempting to reconcile Christian Science with human philosophy and to "assist" its power with material diagnosis. During this period I experienced much discomfort from my back, which resulted sometimes in brief inability to walk completely upright and occasionally to walk at all. When I turned unreservedly to God, the condition was relieved; I was able to carry on my studies and self-help program, including waiting on table. But never did I completely reject the insidious suggestion that a bone condition might necessitate medical attention.
In subsequent years, as the condition grew worse, I consented to X rays, which showed nothing out of order. Gradually, and only after several other severe ills had been overcome through the help of a practitioner, I appreciated the words of our textbook (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." I saw that I had been trying to do something about matter —a material body—instead of correcting my thinking about that body. During this entire experience I was beautifully protected while maintaining a strenuous program of teaching and summer camp duties. It was with great joy that I realized one day there had been no sign of the crooked back for more than a year. The "crooked" thinking had been replaced by Truth as I devoted more time to seeking first the kingdom of God, as the Bible admonishes.
