In the summer vacation following...

In the summer vacation following my sophomore year in high school I took a part-time job at a local food-processing plant. While working there, I met with an accident. When school opened in the fall, I was unable to attend, as my condition had steadily grown worse. For weeks my mother and I searched for the reason for this delayed healing. Several times we called for the help of a Christian Science practitioner in a neighboring town. The discovery that my dislike for another person had developed into hate brought error into plain sight, ready to be destroyed.

After studying page 591 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where Mary Baker Eddy defines man as "the compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind," I realized not only that I was not being a good representative of Mind or the image and likeness of God, but that I was not seeing this person's true identity as God's idea. It was impossible to love God and hate His reflection. When I gained an understanding of the spiritual concept of man, my healing came, complete in every way.

After the Christmas holidays I was ready to return to school. I went to see the principal, who thought it would be too much for me to try to make up almost half of the school term. He recommended that I attend my classes, get as much as I could, and repeat the grade the following year. I returned to school and tried to hold on to the thought that I could not be robbed of anything which was rightfully mine and that it was surely right for me to expect to graduate with my class. In the Bible we read (I John 3:1, 2): "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God."
