What is God? Christian Science teaches that He is the creator of all good and is known through demonstration of His nature

OUR SEARCH FOR GOD

Opening her class in 1898, our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, asked, "What is God?" Mrs. Eddy knew that everyone wants life and peace, and that these are unattainable without a true knowledge of God. She was therefore eager that all her students should know God as He had been revealed to her (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 587): "The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."

In this period of unrest and disturbance there are encouraging signs of an awakening desire to know God better. Mankind's hope lies in this promise of God to Jeremiah (Jer. 31: 34): "They shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them."

Christian Science reveals that God is the creator of all that really is. He is All-in-all, the only cause, and His infinite manifestation is the universe, including man. In the Bible we read (Rev. 1:8), "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty." The one and only God is just and merciful, patient and forgiving, a loving Father-Mother. He is Truth, Life, Love, the ever-present and omnipotent Mind, and man is His perfect and complete representative.
