Statement in textbook opens way to healing of nervous breakdown

When Christian Science came to me, I was suffering from a severe nervous breakdown, the result of the shock of losing a small son in a car accident. Three months after the accident I suddenly found myself unable to use my right hand and right foot for more than five minutes at a time. Several doctors, including two specialists, did what they could for me, but for three years was no improvement in my condition.

One day over seventeen years ago, while I was in a nursing home undergoing a new electrical treatment, I remarked to a visitor, "I believe I have tried everything except Christian Science." Much to my surprise she told me she was a Scientist and said that if I wished it, she would bring me the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the same day. She did so.

I began to read at once. I stopped at page 14, where Mrs. Eddy writes, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints." Again and again I read this statement. I was thinking, How could it be otherwise; how could feeling and action have a different origin? The whole afternoon and evening I dwelt on such thoughts. Towards night I realized that the depression and some of the extreme lassitude had left me. I seemed to be lifted above the pains and sorrows of an illusive world. I knew that Christian Science would heal me.
