CONQUERING THROUGH CHRIST

When Jesus came to be baptized of John, the Baptist said (Matt. 3:14), "I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?" Jesus replied, "Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness."

The Master with clear spiritual perception saw the need of taking this initial step and conforming to the baptism of John.

The baptism of John includes the abandonment of worldliness. It stands for simplicity of life, purity, and righteousness. Mary Baker Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 81), "Every individual character, like the individual John the Baptist, at some date must cry in the desert of earthly joy; and his voice be heard divinely and humanly." Christian Scientists recognize the need of these steps as waymarks in the path of spiritual ascension. Repentance is a step towards reformation, but unless and until this first step is taken, an individual may shut himself out from many blessings. Turning to Christ, or Truth, we find salvation. Christ conquers sin, and in this strength we triumph.
