EXTRACTS FROM REPORTS of Christian Science Committees on Publication

Exchange-for-Advertising Plan

France

One of the first problems we had to solve was that of establishing friendly contacts with press circles. Of all the work achieved in this sphere before 1940 little remained following the upheavals since the war. It was, therefore, with gratitude that we made use of the excellent means placed at the disposal of Committees on Publication by The Christian Science Board of Directors to attain this aim, namely, offering newspapers a subscription to the Monitor for six months or a year to be paid for in advertising.

Knowing that we were offering French newspapers infinitely more than a simple subscription to a great international newspaper, we went to work and visited over forty of the chief daily and weekly publications in Paris, in the provinces, and in Morocco. Generally the reception was very cordial. These meetings provided an excellent opportunity to talk of the Monitor and to note how it is known and held in high esteem by its French contemporaries, so much so that even where our proposal was not accepted the visit enabled us to make contacts and to leave a door open behind us. The results were most encouraging.
