THE NATURE OF SCIENTIFIC PRAYER

The opening sentence in the first chapter of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy makes this clear "statement: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Here is outlined the nature of the prayer of a righteous man, which we are told in the Scriptures availeth much. This regenerative prayer which reforms the sinner and heals the sick is the one that all earnest students of Christian Science are striving to learn to pray.

"An absolute faith that all things are possible to God" demands faith —a quality of thought that is found in some degree in every human consciousness. Some people have more faith in God, good, than they have acknowledged, even to themselves. Jesus recognized this and sometimes said to those who sought healing of him, "Thy faith hath made thee whole," thus pointing out the value of this quality of thought.

Soon after beginning the study of Christian Science a student began to do healing work. One summer while she was visiting on a ranch, a young cowboy came in from riding the line literally covered with chiggers. At first his antics and remarks concerning his physical condition were very amusing: then she remembered her own experiences with this pest and realized that he needed help. "Don't you want me to pray for your relief?" she asked.
