DEVOTION IS ESSENTIAL TO SUCCESS

"The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 199 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Questions we may ask in this connection are: What is it we desire to achieve? Is it the conquest over a chronic sin or an inveterate disease? Is it the overcoming of a bad habit? Or, best of all, is it an earnest and fervent desire to know God? The last question is the most important.

If our primary desire is to know God, then devotion to the achievement will make the achievement possible. Mrs. Eddy leaves no doubt in our mind about the results when spiritual devotion impels our endeavors. Through a clearer understanding of the truth about God and man, problems, however difficult, become quickly soluble. A two-sided trust, a divided loyalty, or a weakened resolve hinders achievement. Devotion to divine Principle, placing Principle above person, a fervent desire to understand the nature of God and of man as God's image and likeness, is the primary endeavor of a devout student of Christian Science. In order to understand God aright spiritual devotion is essential.

Remember, a spark of devotion will kindle the flame of inspiration. Inspiration unshackles the fetters of the flesh and lifts thought into its native element of harmony.
