THE JOYFUL MEANING OF "THY WILL BE DONE"

The interpretation given by Mary Baker Eddy to the words from the Lord's Prayer, "Thy will be done," has proved the greatest blessing and joy to the writer in her study of Christian Science. She had never accepted the concept that God's will could mean either joy or woe, sickness or health, living or dying, even though she had been taught this for many years in an orthodox church. Resignation to whatever lot befell one, no matter how bitter it seemed, because "God knows best," was not compatible with her concept of the heavenly Father.

Imagine her joy and liberation from fears of all sorts when she learned in Christian Science that God's will always brings happiness and the peace "which passeth all understanding." His way is always the best way.

Our beloved Leader gives as the spiritual sense of the line, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven," the following: "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 17). Studying these words in the light of Christian Science, the writer learned that God is not a Being afar off, not a judge seeing human imperfections and passing sentence on them, but the all-loving Father, whose will is supreme in our affairs as we reflect His qualities.
