During my two and a half years...
During my two and a half years in the American Red Cross I had countless proofs of the availability and power of Christian Science.
Even more than for the physical healings I received. I am grateful for the wonderful sense of confidence I gained, which was especially marvelous to me since so much fear and dismay was being constantly expressed on all sides. Only since my return from France, as I have had time quietly to ponder and evaluate my experiences overseas, have I really begun to appreciate what Christian Science meant to me while in service. I have more fully realized my protection from fear—fear of submarines as we crossed the Atlantic, fear during bombings, fear of plane crashes, explosions, jeep accidents, floating mines in the English Channel—so many human disasters which seemed prevalent. And the most wonderful part of it all was that I had no need to struggle to overcome these fears, so powerful to me and so natural was the presence of good.
One of the physical healings which I experienced took place in England in the winter of 1944. Our unit had been serving a parachute regiment which had suddenly been alerted. Our work was always out of doors, and because of the emergency we were on duty day and night. That was a cold winter, as many will recall. Our billet was without heat. The night the regiment shipped I realized that the difficult which a few days before had appeared to be a bad cold, and which I had thought I was too busy to overcome in Science, was developing serious symptoms.
