"WATCHMAN, TELL US OF THE NIGHT"

How wisely did the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, choose the name for her weekly periodical when she titled it Christian Science Sentinel! And how appropriate is the challenging message of Christ Jesus which appears on the cover of each issue, "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch" (Mark 13:37). It is interesting to note that the word translated "watch" in the King James Version of the Scriptures springs from the Greek root meaning to waken, to rouse from sleep, from disease, from death (See Strong's Greek Dictionary of The New Testament, p. 25, reference no. 1453.) What better message could our revered Leader send weekly to her followers than this dynamic, rousing call of the great Master.

Of course, all know that a sentinel is one who watches or guards; and how safe is that household or community where a night watchman is ever on the alert, ever standing guard. He not only must keep awake himself, but must be ready to rouse others at the approach of danger. Therefore when our Christian Science Sentinel knocks at our doors weekly, we may say in the language of the hymn,
