REMOVING THE BLINDFOLD

Writing of the inability of many to see the spiritual import of Moses' teachings, Paul declared (II Cor. 3:14), "But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is 'done away in Christ." The veil of material-mindedness spread over all mortals is today being "done away in Christ" through the revelation of the allness of God, Spirit, and the nothingness of error in Christian Science. Mankind is discovering through the healing of sin and disease by the medicine of Mind that all true Science is divine, and the only law the law of omnipotent Principle, infinite good.

In her sermon "Christian Healing" (pp. 18, 19) our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, relates how certain Oxford students experimented on a felon to prove the power of mind over the flesh. The man was blindfolded and made to believe he was bleeding to death, and death resulted from that belief. Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 19): "They proved that every organ of the system, every function of the body, is governed directly and entirely by mind, else those functions could not have been stopped by mind independently of material conditions. Had they changed the felon's belief that he was bleeding to death, removed the bandage from his eyes, and he had seen that a vein had not been opened, he would have resuscitated."

The simple process of removing the bandage from his eyes would have enabled that unfortunate individual to see that to human sense all was well. Instantly his depressed organs would have responded to his corrected mental state and become normal. Does not this incident illustrate the healing process of Christian Science, which, by removing the bandage of false beliefs, made up of fear, ignorance, superstition, envy, pride, malice, false appetites, and so on, enables us to "see" or, in other words, to discern the true evidence of spiritual sense, which reveals man as the likeness of God and thereby heals the sick? Material sense blinds the eyes of mortals, and its blindfold is removed only through the spiritual understanding of the one Mind, God, and His perfect idea. Our Loader considered the lesson taught by this experiment of the Oxford students of sufficient importance to include it in the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 379).
