Of Good Report

When the Smith Lake dike at the western end of Vanport City, Oregon, broke last May, flooding the city with many feet of water within an hour, the Christian Science Committee on Publication for Oregon immediately telegraphed the general Committee on Publication in Boston. Assured by telephone that The Mother Church would give every assistance, the Oregon Committee radiocast a call for food and clothing to be delivered to the branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, in Portland and organized an emergency flood relief committee.

The response to the radio appeal for food and clothing, which was repeated several times during the day, was immediate and overwhelming. With the help of a small truck which was made available to the committee it was possible to collect the donations from the ten branch Churches of Christ, Scientist, in Portland so expeditiously that just twenty-six hours after the first call for help the clothing unit at Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, was opened and the distribution of much-needed articles of clothing began. Food was disbursed from Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist. Generous financial contributions enabled the committee to give direct grants to some who had lost all their material possessions. Temporary living quarters and employment were found for many needing them.

When it became apparent that the work of distribution would interfere with the orderly conducting of the Sunday services in the two branch churches, several leading real estate firms were consulted. On Saturday a centrally located store was placed at the disposal of the flood relief committee rent free. Telephones were installed and lights provided.
